What is Pomegranate Gin Tonic?

Pomegranate gin tonic is a fruity version of the gin tonic with pomegranate juice added, for color and for a bit of flavor. The recipe doesn’t call for much, and you’re free to experiment with how little or how much pomegranate you want in your drink. 

Keep in mind, this need pomegranate juice instead of syrup so the flavor won’t be as strong, and the drink will only be as sweet at your tonic water and pomegranate juice allow.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 oz gin
  • 3 oz tonic water
  • 1 oz pomegranate juice

Instructions
 

  • Fill a Collins or highball glass halfway with ice.
  • Pour in gin, them pomegranate juice.
  • Finish with the tonic water.

Notes

This recipe yields a highball, but you could shorten it by using 1 oz tonic water and 1 oz pomegranate juice to get a lowball.

When is this drink best ?

I feel the pomegranate gin tonic works great as a summer cocktail, with a really pretty color and a refreshing bubbly texture. I an easily see this served at a pool party, at lunch, brunch, or a relaxed dinner somewhere with family or friends. It’s not a fussy drink, it’s more of a fun, relaxed drink. 

My thoughts on Pomegranate Gin Tonic

I liked this the pomegranate gin tonic, perhaps more than the original, since it’s such a great pairing (gin and pomegranate). The juice doesn’t overwhelm the gin, but it does work with the botanical notes. If you were to use a flavored gin I imagine it’d work even better. 

The tonic water is there to provide balance and a little bit of bitterness, though this will depend on the brand of tonic water you use. Some are more bitter, some more flavorful, some sweeter, etc.

Notes, substitutes, and tips

Make sure you use a good quality pomegranate juice with a good flavor in this. Or, if you want it on the sweeter side omit the pomegranate juice and add 0.5 oz of pomegranate syrup instead.
