Tequila sour is a really nice take on the classic sour, reminding you of an orchard in summer. There any many kinds of sours, each with their own harm, but tequila adds a beautiful note.

What is Tequila sour?
Tequila sour is a version of a sour, where tequila is mixed with lemon juice, lime juice, simple syrup, and finally egg white for a nice foamy top. It was bound to happen, since there’s a sour for every spirit imaginable, and it was only natural to have an tequila sour.
As most sours do, tequila sour has egg foam on top. It’s there for texture, a bit of flavor, and also to look great. If you want to avoid egg, you can use aquafaba instead (chickpea water). It froths the same as egg white, and it will look just as good.
Tequila Sour Cocktail Recipe
A tequila version of the classic sour cocktail.
- 2 oz tequila
- 1 oz lemon juice
- 0.5 oz lime juice
- 0.25 oz simple syrup
- 0.5 oz egg white (or aquafaba)
- Add all ingredients in a shaker, minus ice. Dry shake for 10-15 seconds.
- Open shaker carefully (pressure), add ice, shake again 10-15 seconds.
- Strain everything into a chilled coupe.
- The dry shake is crucial to get as much foam as possible. If you shake with the ice from the beginning you'll get less foam.
When is this drink best ?
Tequila sour reminds me of fresh red apples for some reason, so I’m classing this as a wonderful summer cocktail, especially late summer (like August). Since this is a small, pretty cocktail I’d see this as more of a dinner or after-dinner drink. In restaurants, in upscale bars, at somewhat fancy events.
My thoughts on Tequila sour
Tequila sour reminded me of apples so much that I can’t un-taste it. There’s something about lemon juice that just brings forth the fruity but not tropical side of tequila. In my book that’s a big win, since I do love apples (especially the sweet red ones). Aside from this, I found the egg foam fun to try and eat/sip, and the overall texture a bit creamy.
This is a strong cocktail, don’t make the mistake of drinking this like fresh apple cider.

Notes, substitutes, and tips
The tequila you use will be very noticeable here. I used gold tequila, which is a bit stronger in flavor than white tequila. Choose whichever version of tequila you like best.
You can use all lemon or all lime juice in this, whichever you prefer. But simple syrup is a must. It’s not very sweet, but it helps things along.
