What is Vodka Press?

The vodka press is essentially a bubbly vodka lemonade (in a way). It’s made up of equal parts plain vodka, lemon-lime soda, and club soda. The result is a bubbly drink that will easily convince you to make another.

In case you’re wondering why it’s called a press, there are two stories that I’ve heard. One states that any bar drink made with equal parts lemon-lime soda and club soda is called a press. The other story claims this cocktail is inspired by the Presbytarian (a mix of ginger ale, club soda, and scotch) with the ginger ale substituted for vodka later on.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz vodka
  • 2 oz lemon-lime soda
  • 2 oz club soda

Instructions

  • Build in ice-filled Collins glass.
  • Start with vodka, then soda and club soda. Stir lightly.

Notes

This is a very refreshing and simple cocktail, and it won't be very sweet. If you want more sweetness, do more lemon-lime soda than club soda.

When is this drink best ?

A vodka press works great in the summer, since it’s so bubbly and refreshing it just looks (and sounds) like the perfect way to battle July heat. And since it’s such a fun, casual drink it can easily be made and served in any setting or occasion. As long as your ingredients are cold and you have access to ice, putting together several glass of this cooler is a breeze.

My thoughts on Vodka Press

I liked the vodka press, quite a lot ! Then again I’m a big fan of all things bubbly, and I have a soft spot for lemon-lime soda. The one I used was Sprite (couldn’t find 7Up) but the flavor is quite similar. Vodka pairs really well with anything citrus, so it also went very well with the soda.

Club soda helped cut through the sweetness in Sprite, however I think it could’ve done with a bit less club soda. If you build this with the recommended amount of ice (a whole lot) all the extra water from the ice and club soda will dilute the sprite too much.

Notes, substitutes, and tips

The original recipe calls for plain, unflavored vodka but if you want some extra flavor you could use a flavored one instead. Citrus works best but I also think a red fruit vodka would work well too.
